A village that did not grow out of a crossroads — it was drawn on paper in the 1950s and named for a developer’s daughter.

A Town Named for a Daughter

Most Chicago suburbs trace back to a railroad stop, a mill, or a farming crossroads that slowly thickened into a town. Carol Stream does not. It was a planned community, laid out by developer Jay Stream on DuPage County farmland in the late 1950s.

The name is the part everyone gets wrong. It is not a creek. On August 26, 1957, Stream’s daughter Carol was critically injured in a car crash. He named the town he was building after her — the village’s own history page states this plainly and specifically debunks the water-feature explanation that still circulates.

The Blum family moved in on November 1, 1958 as the first residents. The village incorporated in 1959, held its first board meeting on February 12 with James Balog as the first Village President, and became a home rule municipality in 1988.

Why the History Still Shapes the Housing Market

Because Carol Stream was built subdivision by subdivision rather than street by street, its housing stock comes in distinct waves with hard edges. The late-1970s and early-1980s detached subdivisions — Western Trails, Shining Waters, Park Hill — look and price nothing like the late-1980s mixed communities such as Spinnaker Cove and Cambridge Pointe, and neither resembles the 2006-built townhomes at Fountains at Town Center.

Ross Ferraro Town Center at 960 N. Gary Avenue — dedicated in 1998 — is the village’s green heart: gazebo, ponds, fountain, visitor center and the summer concert series. A College of DuPage regional branch opened on Kuhn Road in 2002, and a USPS regional processing center has operated at Schmale and Fullerton since 1992.
